Also, please note that, although it is generally recommended that records relating to the treatment of Medicare patients should be retained at least 10 years, based upon 422.504 (i) (2), it would appear that records relating to the treatment of Medicare Advantage patients must be retained even longer, and for the longer of: 10 years from date of treatment; 10 years from completion of the previous audit; or 10 years from the final date of the final contract period of the contact between CMS and the MA organization. (This could be substantially longer period than the two above.)
